King George V (1911-1936)

The first Australian bronze (97% Copper, 2.5% Zinc, 0.5% Tin) halfpennies were struck in 1911 from the London Mint. Over the next seven years Australian halfpennies were struck in Heaton (England) with “H” mintmark dated 1912, London without mintmarks dated 1913 and 1914. Also dated 1914 the “H” mintmark continued including 1915. In 1916, 1917 and 1918 halfpennies were struck in Calcutta, which signifies an “I” for India Mintmark.

From 1919 to 1926, Australian halfpennies were struck at the Sydney and Melbourne mints. From 1927 to 1936, the Melbourne Mint exclusively struck coins for this period.

King George VI (1938-1952)

From 1938 to 1941 Melbourne Mint struck the following coins. In 1939, there were 2 different types of reverses struck. The type 1 version features the standard Commonwealth of Australia design. The type 2 features a kangaroo, which was the standard reverse design used up until 1964.

In 1942, the Melbourne Mint (no mintmark) and the Indian dot before and after “halfpenny” (I Mintmark.  Also dated 1942, the first Perth Mint halfpenny was struck, featuring a dot after the word “Halfpenny”. In 1943 Melbourne and India struck halfpennies for Australia. From 1944 to 1951, the Melbourne and the Perth Mint struck halfpennies. Also in 1951, the London mint struck halfpennies for Australia with a “PL” mintmark after the word halfpenny in 1952, the Perth Mint solely struck halfpennies with a dot after the word “Australia”.

Queen Elizabeth II (1953-1964)

Between 1953 and 1964, the Perth Mint struck all the halfpennies excluding 1959 (Melbourne Mint). The 1953 has the mintmark (dot after Australia), while from 1960 to 1964, the dot was situated after the word halfpenny.
